Hi,
My name is Tim, I'm the guitarist in a new Oxford Uni Band called ones and zeros (myspace.com/onesandzerosband). We're very new and I'm wondering how and where we could play in order to make people want to come to our gigs, so places that are cool, cheap and well placed. Could you suggest anywhere?
Some further questions...
1. What tends to be the way Uni bands promote themselves? 2. Do you have a local radio station that has bands on? 3. Do you put on your own nights? 4. What are the gigs that people go to in Oxford, is it the venue or the band? 5. Are there any other cool Oxford uni bands around?
I would really appreciate help with any of these,
Thanks
Tim.

The Wheatsheaf and The Cellar are obvious ports of call for nice venues to play - your best bet there might be just to sidle up to their respective soundmen, make a bit of small talk and slip them a demo. Then there's the Market Tavern and the Jericho Tavern, but my current amount of knowledge about those venues is "fuck all". They're nicely located though. et puis: 1) Flyers/stickers/gigs/shameless internet promotion also check out the Nightshift forums: nightshift.oxfordmusic.net/phpbb3/index.php2) There's Oxide Radio, I guess. Their head of music is Rachel Williams (Hertford). Once again, the amount I know about local radio is roughly "fuck all" 3) yes. Ask Daisy or Rose (rosyposy on the boards). They're very friendly. 4) depends on the gig, depends on who's promoting. 5) There are some, but the scene really isn't as happening as it could be. If someone wants to contribute some non-rubbish answers, leap in.

market tavern is closed to add to anything we've already got is: 1) omg facebook 2) dunno 3) similarly 4) generally neither - tends to be the promoters. nightshift is your best bet there 5) "cool oxford uni band" is kind of a non sequitur - lots of bands are cool and have people from oxford uni in, but if bands self-identify as "oxford uni band" rather than "band that happens to be from oxford university" something's wrong (it would be rude of me to cite examples) i realise that wasn't that helpful
